Here I have put together some points and things that need to be considered when deciding on a Network Marketing or MLM opportunity. Sure the guy who called you told you how incredible their company is, and how much money they made, but incredible and lots of money doesn’t sell the gig for many who are doing their due diligence … and if you were sold on potential, based on someone’s income then you are an idiot. That’s like me saying I am going to be a billionaire in the stock market just because Warren Buffet did it. Buffet is a great example of highlights in an industry, but he is the 1% who became a 1% doing things his way, NOT LISTENING TO SOMEONE ELSE or FOLLOWING THE HERD.

MLM and Network Marketing is very much like this scenario

So when you look for a home based business here are some things to consider.

I hope it is not a secret to you that the best way to achieve success with any MLM company is to find one that you can get passionate about. Money or the possibility of mass earnings does not mean passion, as it is the end result of passion. HELL I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT MAKING MONEY, but I am more passionate about what I do to make the money… SEO … I love seo, I love the challenge, I love the uniqueness of every marketing project, and I love the big pay days when I am successful with each project … Make sense ? If you are passionate about vitamins or weightloss then congrats , if you are passionate about personal development or self help then congrats … but always make sure that the product is something that gets you excited and not just the idea of making boat loads of money because you will undoubtedly fail…

The argument of PUBLICLY HELD COMPANY VERSUS PRIVATELY HELD … Many will say that a publicly held company is better than a private company when it comes to terms of picking an MLM. My argument is contrary to this as we have seen some stellar companies that are private such as Ariix.com who provide incredible products with great leadership (relatively new ? yes) but private is always the first step to PUBLIC right ? USANA was private at one time, so was AMWAY .

Government SEC rules require public companies to be transparent and open. Private companies do not have to be. Should this concern you ? maybe, maybe not, but let’s consider that Facebook, Groupon , and Zynga  all started off as PRIVATE COMPANIES yet they are WILDLY SUCCESSFUL. Groupon and Zynga are now PUBLIC

With public companies you can see the companies financial figures, who is running it, etc. They can’t really hide anything if all of that is public. With a private network marketing company, you have no idea the company is doing financially, but then this begs the question … Why care what the company is doing financially ? I mean with companies such as Lifepath where the distributor got paid first and then paid the company, wouldn’t the main concern be “WHAT YOU ARE DOING FINANCIALLY ?” granted people want to know that their income stream has some sort of longevity … but I will say this candidly … As a network marketing professional DO NOT MARRY YOURSELF TO 1 opportunity … you are a distributor…Think a beer distribution center that distributes for Budweiser, Coors, Corona, etc multiple products under one distributorship … Think of yourself as an opportunity store, and diversify your portfolio, JUST IN CASE THE WELL RUNS DRY … make sense ? Below consider the transparency score for the mlm or network marketing company you plan to work with

Next let’s look at the network marketing companies commission plan. There are so many different variations of the commission plan from one mlm to another. I honestly say ignore the fancy talk of binary’s, legs, spill overs and caps. Seriously this all dilutes the actual distributor % per sales commission. For instance, is the company paying 50% commissions ? 20% commissions ? Is the commission structure tiered ? Thus the first 20 sales you earn 20% the next 20 sales on up you earn 50% ? Focus only on the paid per sale numbers and let the fancy talk be just that … The fancy talk is there to glorify earnings,  and yes matrix systems earn you a lot of money, but I feel when distributors come on board with MLM’s excited by the matrix or spillover effects, they tend to have their hopes on leveraging the system as opposed to making actual sales …

One time I had a guy come to me and says can you help me market ? I said sure it’s what I do. I asked him what was his network marketing/mlm company. For privacy purposes we will call this company “home based business” , I asked a few questions including compensation. This guy went on a tangent talking about how the matrix this, that and the other is geared to help people make money fast. I said ok so how much do you make a month ? he said $450 dollars per month, personally I was offended by this I mean I can do that in a day fairly easily … so the next question was how many people have you personally sponsored, he said 3 … and here I am laughing, like buddy you are bitching and complaining about making 450 bux a month and you only have 3 personally sponsored individuals ? His response I chose not to be be sympathetic to was “well they told me the system would do the work for me “, my response was OK so you expect my system to do the marketing work for you ? his answer was YES … I told him GOOD BYE … you see you cannot be in love with systems … if you want to make a killing systems will help you, but they will not SAVE YOU…3 personally sponsored people is ridiculous … if he would have just focused on his business and his DIRECT EFFORT … he wouldn’t be calling me … again FOCUS ON YOUR EFFORT and don’t fall in love with the commission plan

For products, there are 3 considerations. One, is it a product you can be passionate about. We covered that above. Next, is it differentiated from others? Often people will say ‘ours is the best, because we have the most sales’. But if a new company just came out with a better version, and has just started selling, it could have a much better product but still have lower sales number. When possible, look to tangible items to make you judgment, such as scientific studies, research citations, etc.  Don’t just believe the ‘ours is better’ line. Next, is the price correct? Think of it like you are setting up a restaurant. You need a menu that appeals to people, and that has the right price. You wouldn’t setup a fast food franchise and charge five star prices. Finally, is the product consumed? If you want re-occuring income, then you need a product that generated re-occurring sales. If you sell laptops, that people only replace every 5 years, you are going to find new people to buy laptops each month. If you sell a laptop that only can connect to the internet using your internet plan, and you can charge every month for internet access (think iPhone), you are going to have a re-occurring income source. If the product you are looking at matches the above requirements, give it a 20.

Consider all the variables in picking a network marketing/mlm company I mean this is your home based business we are talking about, and yes everyone wants to make a killing from home and make a lot of money, but the truth is you have to have an intelligent approach to picking a business. Getting caught up in all the BS we are better or they are a scam is all nonsense. Do your due diligence and make sure you are logically appealed to the business as opposed to emotionally. Think about it, if you were to open up a Burger Franchise, and Mcdonalds says we are home of the big mac and people love it, but burger king says we are home of the WHOPPER and are better than BIG MACS … what would be your next step ? Join the franchise who says they are better ? or pick the franchise based on sales volume, foot traffic, location, competition, start up costs, and previous owners book keeping. Again picking a home based business, mlm or network marketing company requires the same due diligence… surely you will find posts and forums on Scam.com with negative talk about a company, but then ask yourself … WHO PUT IT THERE ? was it the competitor looking to leach onto your emotional intent to join ? again KEEP IT LOGICAL

Today I will showcase a case study of how very real SEO is and how it can benefit your online business. No matter if:

So lets start with a prelude. Currently I am contracted as the SEO manager for an MLM company called Ariix and given the responsibility to manage all of their web properties. These web properties include

• Ariix Facebook page – www.facebook.com/ariixcorporate

All have first page presence for their keyword “Ariix” and before they hired me that wasn’t the case. In fact I found that the corporate big wigs knew about SEO, but just didn’t know how to apply SEO knowledge, and that’s where I came in …

So lets get to the nitty gritty:

SELECTING THE NAME OF YOUR SITE – IMPORTANT !!!

If you want to rank on Google for a specific search phrase your first step is to find a related domain. For example if you want to rank high in the search engines for lets say “make money online” you will want to own the domain name that will include this phrase, such as “makemoneyonlinetoday.com”. The domain name is a firm indicator to Google what your site will be about.

Proof of this elementary concept: This very blog! – how so ?

• You will see that though my core domain is www.ianoint.com – This very blog includes a pre-fix (what we call a sub-domain) as in lifepathunlimited.ianoint.com, now I am not affiliated with this organization at all!!! but wanted to manipulate the search engines for proof of concept. RESULT: First page presence for the keyword “Lifepath Unlimited” Click for proof

There are exceptions to this rule: but seriously who wants to know about exceptions ? I hope you do!!! because understanding the exceptions in the SEO game will help you better understand your approach to optimizing your site. We now understand domain level importance, as we want to include the keyword of witch you are optimizing for in your websites name.

A client of mine a mortgage professional asked me what was the first step in getting ranked for the keyword “California Mortgage” I said register the domain name californiamortgagedepot.com . But surely this person would want to rank well for keywords such as FHA loan, or VA loan, basically other keywords that are related to his industry…does this mean he needs other domain names to reflect that ?

NO !!! THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS & I will talk about it soon enough

Google has an uncanny ability to rank sites based on keywords, relevancy, synonym relations, and content relations, thus a site focusing on mortgages will be related to mortgage products.

Just as a site (like this one) attempting to rank well for multi-level marketing will invariably rank well for mlm , two very different words, but Google understands it’s context: View the screen shot to understand this better

In the image above you will see my website listing for the keyword “Multi-Level Marketing” but wait !!!!! there is nothing that says Multi-Level Marketing on my listing, BUT the words Network Marketing and MLM are in BOLD LETTERS: The context of my site and words in my title & content description trigger relevance to Multi Level Marketing (as they are one in the same) according to Google’s ranking factorization.

Some of you are screaming BUT WAIT … lifepathunlimited.ianoint.com has no domain name relevance to “Network Marketing” how is it ranked ? there you go THIS IS THE EXCEPTION

For those who do not apply a keyword rich domain name, there is another factor that indicates what your site is all about to Google:

Meta Tags – Title & Description:

Some will ask what are meta tags I will give you the Wikipedia explanation

Meta elements provide information about a given Web page, most often to help search engines categorize them correctly. They are inserted into the HTML document, but are often not directly visible to a user visiting the site.

They have been the focus of a field of marketing research known as search engine optimization (SEO), where different methods are explored to provide a user’s site with a higher ranking on search engines. In the mid to late 1990s, search engines were reliant on meta data to correctly classify a Web page and webmasters quickly learned the commercial significance of having the right meta element, as it frequently led to a high ranking in the search engines — and thus, high traffic to the website.

Using my tags

I am purposely and effectively telling Google what my site is about, since there is not a domain name relevance to my keyword: Does this mean you do not need domain name relevance ? Maybe!!! I mean Wikipedia ranks very well for most searches, yet their domain name does not have any relevance…but applying both domain name relevance and tag relevance TOGETHER creates a super solid foundation to your SEO efforts.

I use All In One SEO plugin for wordpress to be able to easily manage these tags, if you are running a wordpress blog THIS IS A TOOL that is NOT AN OPTION!

So since I do not have the privilege of having a keyword rich domain, I had to sorta kinda make it up with my meta elements above. Implementing meta elements is NOT AN OPTION but a standard, keyword Rich Domain or NOT !!!

So how do these meta elements help ? Well if you do a search for the keyword “Network Marketing” you will see that I am currently positioned on PAGE 2 of Google

Now I have to tell you the truth … I am only begun recently optimizing my site for the term Network Marketing . Started about a month ago. First I was listed on page 20 (wayyy back there) then page 8 (half way there) to now page 2 (almost there) enroute to page 1 ( finally there ) lol

Again this was all for proof of concept, and sharing this Case Study with you, I needed to show you, how it’s done and provide undeniable proof, as opposed to those so called marketing gurus who want you to BUY THEIR PRODUCTS, PROMISE RANKINGS but NEVER SHOW YOU PROOF. That’s where I am different, as my work speaks for itself…

Links – Backlinks & How they effect ranking.

Now we have all heard that if you want better rankings on Google you need back links. I was always perplexed by this … because I have been able to attain first page presence for some of my pages without back links at all I rank page 1 position 1 for the keyword search Network Marketing Tips 2012 click to see for yourself … how did I do it ? easy my meta title and meta tags, show relevancy, but my URL is a direct match…it looks like this

lifepathunlimited.ianoint.com/network-marketing-tips-for-2012  (a direct match)

Google has placed relevance not on the domain but on the page title ….Again confirming my belief that Google utilizes a naming metrics proving strong meta descriptions are fundamental to your SEO success

But what if a million websites have a page on their site with the meta title “Network Marketing” how does GOOGLE CHOOSE ? this is where back links come in. As I shared with you before, I am currently optimizing this blog for the keyword “Network Marketing” and listed on page 2 currently, but according to Google, there are 126,000,000 results yes 126 million results … how did my site beat so many ?

First lets start with LINKS:

First you will some that in some parts of my blog you will find links highlight, just as the VERY FIRST TWO LINKS YOU SEE ON THE TOP OF THIS POST…it’s linking right back to my HOME PAGE … actually I have quite a few of these links all over my site… a fairly large site mind you, but with these links linking back to myself, I am also take advantage of a common SEO exploit. GOOGLE LOVES LINKS… So when Google comes to my site they see these links and follow it just like a user. Google’s spider then says HMMMM he is linking to his home page so the home page must be pretty important…Since I am using descriptive links such as MLM, and Network Marketing. Google says OK this site must be relevant to these keywords… This is known as SOLID INTERNAL LINKING, basically using descriptive links to tell Google what is the nature of your site…

NOW BACK LINKS are other sites linking TO ME, links from other pages using Descriptive Linking also tells Google hey, his site is about Network Marketing.

For example: http://internetbusiness.myblogzone.info/2011/05/seo-is-important-for-small-businesses/ is linking to me with the word Network Marketing

and so is http://www.seopligg.com/upcoming/page/125/ along with close to 500 other websites … Click the links to see if you can find the word Network Marketing – click it and see where it takes you … (BACK HERE DOESN’T IT)

Thus a solid internal linking and back linking strategy is super important, again I am page 2 and moving on up implementing these strategies. I do this with other keywords as well… http://columbusinvestmentproperties.com/2011/10/page/12/ is linking to me with the keyword Multi-Level Marketing and guess what … I AM MOVING UP THE RANKS … again I hope this is proof enough.

FINALLY … YES YOU MADE IT TO THE END OF THIS SUPER LONG POST…

CONTENT IS KING

With everything shared, content is KING, why ? well if I posted crap content on this post would you have read it ? Would you perceive me as an authority, or just another piece of CRAP WEBSITE ? Content creates an impression on your readers, keeps them compelled and keeps them revisiting.

More importantly QUALITY CONTENT KEEPS A VISITOR ON YOUR SITE LONGER & believe it or NOT GOOGLE tracks how long visitors hang out on your site.  If a majority of your visitors spent 2 seconds on your site, what is that telling GOOGLE ? it is telling GOOGLE your site is JUNK and not relevant to what the user is seeking, after all if a user found quality relevant content wouldn’t they hang out longer ?

The average person hangs out on this very blog for 3 minutes on average … that tells GOOGLE YOU ARE READING and ENJOY WHAT YOU ARE READING, Google uses time on site by visitors as another indicator of importance.

So if you are creating CRAP CONTENT or COPIED CONTENT – DUPLICATE CONTENT . Google will notice this … so do not try to beat the system with junk content just for the sake of filling up a site and getting rankings … YOU WILL FAIL …

Besides in MLM & Network Marketing or any other HOME BASED BUSINESS for that matter the point of your blog is to build a relationship with your readers right ? SO PROVIDE THEM WITH SOMETHING UNIQUE THAT WILL SELL THEM ON YOU!
