Who goes to Bonnaroo? – Bizjournals.com (blog)

Let’s be honest — whatever your image is of a Bonnaroo fan, you will find that person on the farm in Manchester come mid-June when the line-up hits the stage: The barefoot and dreadlocked. The bohemian parents and their toddler. The Easy Rider-style motorcycle hippie. John from accounting. Sig Eps and Delta Pis. The occasional business reporter.

A 2005 study of Bonnaroo, conducted by Middle Tennessee State University’s Business and Economic Research Center, speaks to the variety of attendees at the festival, even while confirming that it is largely a four-day party for young people.

According to the study, which surveyed 1,000 attendees of the 2005 festival, 84 percent were between 18 and 29.

Thirteen percent — representing about 9,750 people, assuming an overall crowd of about 75,000 — were between 30 and 44. Three percent, or about 2,250, were between 45 and 64. (In case your memory is fuzzy, top-billed acts from 2005 included Widespread Panic, Dave Matthews Band, The Allman Brothers Band and The Black Crowes).

Not surprisingly, the study suggests that more attendees came from Tennessee than any other state, though hardly representing a majority. According to the survey, 9.5 percent of fans were from Tennessee, followed by Ohio (6.7 percent), Virginia (5.8 percent), New York (5.62) and Georgia (5.16 percent).

Only 0.92 percent of respondents came from Coffee County.
